A Tool for All of Your Training Needs

We designed the Akado Gekken Blade as a nearly universal training tool for Japanese swordsmanship. For kenshi (swordsmen) to practice kihon (basic movements) and kata (forms) they needed solid weight and correct balance. With a traditional saya our multipurpose swords are all ideal for iai/battou (drawing technique). In addition, with a wide edge, the Akado sword is suitable for combative fencing practice. All Akado Gekken Blades are 9260 spring steel and tempered to spring back to shape without taking a set and the blades have an edge that tapers from a maximum of 3mm down to ~2mm. The blades have a rounded tip with a large central hi (groove) to offset the weight from the thicker edge. For durability, the base of the blade is set directly against the seppa (spacers) and tsuba (hand guard) with no habaki (blade collar).

Specifications:

I’ve been using this sword for almost a year now and it is an excellent product. The look alone is rivaled by no other, being constructed like a real katana is my favorite part. The slightly longer than average tsuka is perfect for using with HEMA longsword rated gloves. I have a ruggedized version and it has seen super heavy use against other sparring katans and longswords. It has taken it like a champ. this particular tsuba guard has withstood significant use and though it gets dinged up, it won’t deform. The only part that has failed after a long time was the copper spacer that secures the top of the tsuba causing the guard to become loose. This is a consumable part and is supposed to be replaced as it wears down from repeated impact. The bamboo pegs are also easy to replace on the non ruggedized model as well. They are also consumable and part of maintaining the sword. It has far surpassed my expectations and has brought me great joy. I’d recommend using the rubber tips for HEMA use. Overall excellent product, highly recommend it.
